Property Tax Benefits in Florida

Property Tax Benefits in Florida

Ownership of real estate in Florida, as elsewhere, entails both burdens

and benefits. Burdens, of course, include both property taxes and

protecting neighbors and other members of the public against nuisance or

dangerous characteristics of the land.

Property tax-related benefits of ownership are frequently overlooked.

Among these are exemptions from taxation and special classifications of

property. Some of exemptions and classifications or "exceptions" can

literally eliminate the property tax bill!

For example, did you know that a 100% exemption is available to at

least two types of homeowners in Florida? It's true.

Veterans who were honorably discharged with a service-connected total

and permanent disability are eligible to have the entire value of their

homestead property removed from the tax rolls annually! Their surviving

spouses are entitled to the same benefit.

Civilians with certain disabilities are also eligible to document and

establish entitlement to 100% exemption of homestead property. Any real

estate owned and used as a homestead by a paraplegic, hemiplegic, or

other totally and permanently disabled person who must use a wheelchair

for mobility, or who is legally blind, can establish entitlement to this

valuable exemption.

Information regarding exemptions is available from your County Property
